Vass NC police officer risks his life to stop wrong way driver privateofficer.com

VASS, N.C.Nov 22 2013-- The State Highway Patrol says a Vass police officer risked his life to stop a wrong-way driver.
It happened around 8:30 p.m. Tuesday on U.S. Highway 1 near the intersection of Main Street, just south of Vass.
Investigators said the Vass Police Department got a call about a careless and reckless driver headed northbound in the southbound lanes and Officer Andrew Schofield Jr. spotted the car.
"I seen the vehicle in my lane and I put on my lights, and at that time I come to a stop and I see the vehicle was not going to stop, so I made a split second decision to stay in the lane and stop her from hitting someone else, or someone getting killed last night," Schofield said.
Schofield turned on his blue lights and used his patrol car to block the road, but the wrong-way driver plowed into him head on.
"I just held on to the steering wheel. That's all you can do is hold on," Schofield said.
Officer Schofield was taken to Moore Regional Hospital and was treated and released. He is being praised by many for putting his own life on the line to save others.
"That's what we're out here to do, I don't think I'm a hero. I'm just doing my job," Schofield said.
Troopers said the wrong-way driver - 63-year-old Donna Lee Kramer - was taken by helicopter to UNC Chapel Hill.
Officials said Kramer may have suffered some kind of medical problem before the crash.

Pink Heart Picks Hotly Bedded, Conveniently Wedded

Pink Heart Picks Hotly Bedded, Conveniently Wedded

For the final Pink Heart Picks book review, PHS editor Donna Alward curled up with a glass of wine and Kate Hardy's Hotly Bedded, Conveniently Wedded

...

One of the great things about Christmas break is more reading time, and on Boxing Day I settled in with a glass of pinot noir and one of Kate's backlist - Hotly Bedded, Conveniently Wedded

. It was ten o'clock, I figured I'd get a start on it and and finish it on the 27th.

Instead I turned the last page at just a hair past midnight, only breaking to refill my glass.

Alex and Bel are some of the most likeable characters I've ever had the pleasure to "meet". It's very hard to make a marriage of convenience plausible in this day and age and so Kate bolstered the initial reason with family involvement - both families werevery behind the marriage and with Alex's mom being ill, neither of them wanted to disappoint everyone by confessing it wasn't "real".

Alex's reasons for not wanting to fall in love aren't perhaps the strongest - but the reader doesn't care so much because it's so obvious that despite his assurances, Alex is ready to settle down and start a family. He's a workaholic who's getting clucky and it's pretty adorable - and he's also pretty good to Bel, too. He treats her so well - they don't just say they are best friends but they ACT like best friends. They share interests, and their professions were different enough that it gave the book a very fresh feel and made it interesting.

Bel's reasons for being afraid are much stronger and I really felt for her...at first it's easy to believe that she's focused on her work because she's dedicated but as the layers are peeled back we see how wrecked she is every time she sees babies and happy families. When Alex promises to try to give her everything she dreams of, that was it. I think *I* wanted to marry him. And when he ends up starting his new job and working late and travelling, I really felt Bel's loneliness, because at this point she knows she loves him and is fairly sure he'll never be in love with her the same way.

Without giving more spoilers, I will say that the black moment had me in tears but Alex showed what a good man he was and the ending was lovely.

If you're looking for a sexy, feel-good, emotional read that's like a breath of fresh air - snag this one for your e-reader (or find a rare print copy online).

This is the first time I'm not announcing a new pick for the next month. Thanks for hanging out with me the last few years as I read and reviewed some fanastic category romances.
In 2012 my role here at the PHS is changing - after several years as editor I'm stepping into a columnist role- and a brand new monthly column called ON WRITE SUPPORT: DONNA'S MONTHLY CHECKUP. Each month I'll be popping in and sharing what's going well, what's not, what I'm working on....it should be fun! And maybe along the way I'll find ways of refining my process...
In the meantime, Happy New Year to you all, and see you in January!

Marketing Middle-Earth and Friends

Marketing Middle-Earth and Friends

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug opens in December, and of course marketing is building to a crescendo, given the size of the production investment, the importance of the Hobbit brand franchise, and the competition among holiday-time movies. The Hobbit Facebook page has 3.4 million likes, and counting, as the social media marketing machine heats up.

Filmed in New Zealand, like the Lord of the Rings movies, this second in the Hobbit series is renewing interest in New Zealand as a travel destination. All the major players gathered in Wellington for a fan event, one of many marketing activities leading up to the movie debut. Air New Zealand is prepping a jet to look like something out of Middle-Earth and building branded videos and contests around the movie's world premiere.

Other friends of Middle-Earth are also riding on the movie's coat-tails. One example: LEGO is launching a new game based on the Hobbit movie trilogy in 2014.

I Like Sports And I Need To Write About Sports

I Like Sports And I Need To Write About Sports

When I'm out and about in our community and the subject turns to what I write about on TransGriot, I have people tell me that they love it when the Shut Up Fool Awards pop up every Friday. They are appreciative of the hard work I put in and long hours to keep up with all things trans here and around the world.

They enjoy my Ten Questions interviews and love it that I break down politics and how it impacts this community as well. They love my Black trans history posts and for the most part me discussing race and class and how it affects our TBLG community. They love my motivational posts and also want to hear my views and analysis on whatever subject I feel like talking about.

But every now and then I get some pushback as to why I discuss sports on this blog.

Well, frankly, because it's my blog and if I want to talk sports on it, I can. Second, because TBLG sports fans exist, I'm one of them and they need love and content to read, too. I write about my local Houston teams. I have opinions I want to express about developments in the collegiate and professional ranks from time to time. And because female athletes don't get much ink or love in an arena dominated by male sports writers, I'll comment on developments in women's sports that pique my interest.

Far too often female athletes and their athletic achievements are belittled by male sports writers and male sports fans. Women's sports leagues like the WNBA, women's international sports and women's collegiate sports are seen as not deserving of media attention like 'the menz.' until some controversy pops up.

If we don't talk about female athletes, their accomplishments and the issues that impact them, who will?

I like discussing my fave tennis playing siblings the Williams Sisters, who get far too much disrespect from the media, their fellow players and knuckle dragging racist idiots in comment threads despite having Tennis Hall of Fame level careers.

Serena and Venus will always get love here and when deserved, some WTF's. And yes, the 2014 Australian Open starts January 13-26.

Third, keeping up with all things trans means that I need to be talking about trans athletes, our history and how developments in the sports world like the LGBT Sports Coalition and Nike LGBT Sports Summits affect our community.

As Kye Allums, Fallon Fox, Michelle Dumaresq, Christina Kahrl, Keelin Godsey and others prove, trans people are also breaking ground and making history in the sports world as Renee Richards once did when she sued the USTA in 1976 for the right to play in the US open and won.

As a blog that seeks to chronicle trans people making history, that means you readers need to see their stories. They are also trailblazing leaders and pioneers in the sports world that are busting stereotypes about us and they deserve our community's love, understanding, appreciation and support.

Speaking of stereotypes, just as we do so as a community when it comes to doing Trans 101 mythbusting about transpeople in the rest of society, there is just as much disinformation, mythbusting and Trans 101 that needs to be done about transpeople in the sports world.

There are also sports related issues that we need as a community to be paying attention to and be able to discuss authoritatively like the NCAA rules for trans athletes. We need to be able to talk about the International Olympic Committee's Stockholm Consensus that allow trans people to compete in the Olympic Games. We need to be aware about Jazz's successful two year fight with the US Soccer Association to allow trans kids to play and be working on getting FIFA to allow trans athletes to play on international soccer teams like cis people can.

We also need to as a community need to be keeping up with the states that allow trans kids to compete at the high school level in the gender they present to the world and fight for their right to compete.

I also see the parallels between transpeople making groundbreaking strides in athletic competition and the African-American human rights struggle. It's no accident that with the successes of Jesse Owens in the 1936 Olympic Games, boxer Joe Louis, and Jackie Robinson smashing baseball's color line in 1947 among our countless other sporting achievements that African-Americans also gained increased acceptance of our humanity and advancement in our human rights struggle.

I submit that as more out trans athletes make their mark in the sporting world, we'll see less hatred and drama directed at us as a community as a result of their athletic competition success, and it will pave the way for other trans athletes to exceed what the pioneers accomplished.

We transpeeps not only increasingly play the games, we have people like Christina Kahrl, who is breaking ground by writing about the athletes who play them as an ESPN.com columnist and a member of the Baseball Writers Hall of Fame.

I have TBLG sports fans and trans athletes who thank me for writing about them, standing up for their humanity against the transphobic haters and using my TransGriot platform to talk about being a sports personality who happens to be trans. That will continue because trans athletes have an important role to play in our ongoing trans human rights struggle.

Trans athletes not only excel on the field of play to prove we can do so just like any other cis person, we love the various games we play. As they play the games they love, they demolish stereotypes and advance trans human rights at the same time for all of us, even for you trans peeps who hate sports.

So yeah, I like sports, I write about sports and need to continue doing so.

Early Snow and Shout OUT to Rudy!

Early Snow and Shout OUT to Rudy!

Much to my delight, winter came early this year! Between Frozen Thunder (man made snow loop), two sizeable snowfalls, and cold temperatures allowing the Canmore Nordic Centre to blast the snow guns, we've got some great skiing here! It's sort of weird to think about it, but I've been skiing for over a month now! All is going well.

This upcoming weekend my racing season will kick off with some local Alberta Cup races, then I'm off to Silver Star, BC for the NorAm opener. I'm looking forward to getting the racing season underway!

Big thanks to my equipment sponsors, Fischer and Swix. I've got my new poles cut to the perfect length, the new boots are in my opinion, the best Fischer has made yet, and my new skis are wax prepped and in the process of being tested. I'm happy to report they're feeling fast.

Can't complain when you've got weather and snow like this in NovemberShout OUT to Rudy Project for the new gear this season as well! It's always fun sporting new shades when the racing season begins. I tested out the Air Blast the past two days and find they provide great wind protection and peripheral vision with the large single lens. They're light, and with flexible arms, they seem to stay on my head a little better than their counterpart, the Hypermask.

Cake Believe 2014 Hiatus

Cake Believe 2014 Hiatus

As we are approaching the end of 2013 and looking forward to
the new year I have news I would like to share with you all.
Beginning January 2014, Cake Believe will be taking a
hiatus.
First and foremost, I would like to thank all of my wonderful
clients who return to me each and every year to help celebrate those special
moments in their lives. I would not be
the cake artist I am today if it werent for your faith in me. Many of you I consider friends and I love
seeing your kids as they grow, helping welcome babies to your families and being
a part of celebrating the loving moments of weddings and anniversaries. I am so grateful you have chosen my art to be
a part of your special days. Business
has really grown beyond the work of one person and I have spent many months
considering this change.
The things I am
looking forward to: 1) SLEEP! Most weekends I operate on very
few hours of sleep and lots of caffeine (I never thought I would still be
pulling all-nighters so many years after college!)! 2) Family time on the weekends. 3) A kitchen
that isnt covered in SUGAR! ;)
Things I will miss: 1) Meeting new people and seeing
familiar friendly faces. 2) The great smiles and looks of wonder as someone first
sets eyes on their cake! That has been the
priceless gifts I have received when delivering cakes.
When I started this venture it was to give birthday cakes to
my own children that were homemade with love only the way a mother can
make. As a hobbyist caker, I have put so
much of myself into each and every cake, whether for my child or someone
elses. I have grown tremendously as a
baker, cake artist and as a mother. Recently
I found as I was sorting through my pictures of the last few years, they are
mostly cakes/cookies and the like and very few of my own kids and family time. As we sometimes get reminded in life, each
moment we have together is a gift AND kids grow up WAY TOO FAST. I want to be able to spend more time with my
family before the kids are leading their separate lives and moving on and up in
the world.
So while I have loved every moment of creating special cakes
and goodies to help other families celebrate, this hiatus will allow me to
spend everyday moments (especially weekends) with my family. I cant wait to see what my photo downloads
are going to contain.
I dont know what the future holds and when or if Cake
Believe will begin operating again. But
I thank you all for your faith and support of my business. I love you all!
Thanks for thinking
“Cake Believe”!
